Gene Lawrence is a highly skilled Fingerstyle Acoustic Guitarist, Composer, and Arranger with a rich background in the Caribbean music scene. He served as the guitarist for Olive Walke’s ‘La Petit Musicale' Folk Choir in Trinidad and was later known for his captivating performances as a Pan player in the early days of Silver Stars and Troubadors. Showcasing his versatility and talent across various musical genres, Gene's journey has been extensive and diverse.
Gene's influence extends beyond the shores of Trinidad, as he has performed extensively in the United Kingdom and across the Caribbean, leaving a lasting impression through live performances, as well as radio and TV appearances throughout the region.
His contributions to Trinidad's cultural landscape are noteworthy, having been the original Singing M.C. for Paul Keens Douglas' ‘Talk Tent' and making a memorable guest appearance at the 25th Anniversary celebrations in 2008. Collaborating with renowned figures such as Derek Walcott, Gene has played a significant role in the development of theater music, arranging and presenting music for plays like ’Steel' and ‘Odyssey', performed internationally in Italy and Spain. As the Musical Director for Teyat Toutafe tent theatre, Gene's creative vision and dedication to local music have led to the successful production of several plays over multiple seasons.
Gene's talent shines through his original compositions, showcased in his numerous albums and CDs. His music has also made its mark in theatrical productions, including contributions to Adrian Augier's “Traumassy" and Mario Vargas Llosa's “La Chunga", among others.
Beyond his artistic endeavors, Gene has been instrumental in the development of music in the Caribbean. He played a pivotal role in founding organizations such as the National Association of Musicians & Entertainers in Trinidad and the St. Lucia Jazz Society. Notably, he served as the Chairman of the St. Lucia Jazz Festival and held leadership positions in copyright organizations, further cementing his dedication to the region's musical heritage.
